In the world today, people are doing everything themselves. From Youtubing how to fix a car or installing a swimming pool and making it a project society is becoming more independent.

Maybe it’s the price you pay to have someone else do it. Or it could be that you do not want a stranger touching things you care about. Either way, doing things yourself can be very beneficial and cost-friendly. But what happens when you need a technician to check out the wiring around your home. You do not touch that level of D.I.Y with a ten-foot pole because it is dealing with electricity.

Well, today we are going to discuss some of the Different Usage Of Multimeter. It will provide you with an idea about the uses of a multimeter in your home.

What Is A Multimeter?

A multimeter is an electronic measuring instrument that has multiple measurement functions in one. It can measure voltage, current, and resistance. It can be a hand-held instrument used for fault finding and some field service work or a bench device that can measure with a high degree of accuracy.

Different Uses Of Multimeters

Testing Out Old Batteries

Use that many people do not know, but more would love, is the ability to check your batteries to make sure they are still good. I for one go through batteries like they are paper towels and when you have a drawer full of batteries trying to find the best ones with some juice can be the determining factor between watching the game or not.

Checking Light Bulbs

Another great use for the multimeter is checking light bulbs and lamps around the home. Let’s say that your light bulb is burned out or the lamp is just not cutting on, a multimeter can be used here to help solve this mystery. You would first check for a circuit through the bulb then through the lamp to see if they are giving off anything. If one is and the other isn’t then that’s the culprit. Go test it out.

Extension cords

Extension cords are the cornerstone of our television nowadays. With everything being hooked up to them we need more plugs. But what happens when that pesky cord shorts out? With a multimeter, you can check for a broken wire or a bad plug connection. That can save you time fiddling with the cord to see if you can fix it. If the multimeter reads “0.L” it means the cord has a broken wire or a loose connection and you should purchase a new cord.


Many devices that we use today uses fuses. Whether it is your television or your car, fuses are a vital part of their design and our trusty multimeter can save the day once again. It can even check the fuses in your microwave. A word of caution though, when checking fuses in your television and microwave do not touch any other component other than the fuse holder. Some parts can keep a high voltage charge of electricity that can kill you.

Tip: To get the most accurate readings hold the probe tip tightly to the contact area. DO NOT touch it with your fingers.

Wall Switches

Have you ever plugged something into the wall and it just does not work? You go to the breaker to make sure every switch is turned on and they are so now you are stumped. Well, you can check the circuit in the wall to see if it is good (closed) or bad (open). No electrician needed. Make sure you shut off the power to the main electrical panel so you do not electrocute yourself.

Air Conditioner Unit

Your air conditioning unit can also be inspected and some problems fixed with a multimeter. For some reason, your AC unit always goes out in the hottest months of the year many people just pay someone to fix it fast so they won’t have to suffer from the summer heat. But your unit also has a set of fuses that you can diagnose. If you set your meter to 400 volts and it does not read back 230 volts, then something is wrong with a fuse. If it does read 230 volts, then check in the circuit breaker to make sure that it did not just cut off.

House Applications

Grab your favorite food processor or blender and let’s get to work. You can use a multimeter to troubleshoot them if they aren’t running or they are running but not as fast as they used to. How may you ask? By checking the switch blocks. If the reading is 28.4 then it is good reading but if it is our good old friend “0.L” then the switch is dirty or defective.

Tip: To make sure that your readings are accurate cleaning your oxides off the metal probes and keeping your tip points sharp with sandpaper works wonders.

Clothes Dryer Socket

Something that looks like it is from another world is the dryer input socket. It has holes everywhere so diagnosing why your clothes are not drying seems impossible. Well with the multimeter you can test some things out all on your own. Inserting the probes into the correct slots can give you a reading in volts that should match 230 volts and 115 volts. If they do not match that then it may be a fuse that has blown out or a circuit breaker has blown. Both, as well, can be checked using the multimeter. It is just multipurpose, isn’t it?

Electric Stovetops

Is one of your stovetop burners not heating up or is one of them not working at all? Well, with the multimeter you can investigate a faulty electric element in them. Yes, you can use it to see why your food is taking so long to cook. If your reading is 22.5 ohms then it is good and it may be a different burner that is causing the issue but if it reads infinity, then replacing that burner is the next step.

Car Batteries

We know the obvious, that a multimeter can see if a fuse is not working properly, yes but did you know that you can check to see if you need a new battery on your car with it as well? All you should do is set the meter to 15 volts DC or more and touch the probe to the post on the car battery. If the meter reads under 9 then you need to charge it. If the reading is still under 9 volts after you charge it then you need to buy a new battery. A multimeter can be used to investigate your car. Who would have thought?


The world that we live in today is evolving every day. With people being able to show off their skills others can manipulate that same method and do the work themselves which yes, may put some people out of work. But it also saves the little man from paying expensive prices for something that they can do all on their own. Using a multimeter at home may seem like a hassle but would you rather pay an extremely large amount of money paying someone to tell you something that you can tell yourself? I think not.
